Learning Outcomes:

  • To demystify the institutions of the art museum and gallery through repeated texts, assignments, discussion and site visits, aiming to develop a lifelong interest in art and the museum experience.
  • To promote students’ ability to analyze and interpret the form and meaning of works of art, becoming comfortable with discipline-based vocabularies and gaining an awareness of the importance of context (aesthetic, historical, cultural, site) through appropriate readings and museum visits.
  • To provide opportunities to identify, discuss, and (re)create the different written genres used by art professionals to i) promote exhibitions to the general public; ii) review an exhibition for a magazine/journal; and iii) offer a deeper consideration of curated exhibitions and/or specific artworks.  
  • To encourage thoughtfulness and critical awareness when speaking about works of art through guided discussion.  
  • To encourage thoughtfulness and critical awareness in writing about works of art both creatively and analytically.

Course Objectives:

  • Gain confidence discussing and writing about art.
  • Developing art-critiquing skills that students may/may not already have.
  • Explore group work.
  • Set high expectations and standards.
  • Appreciate the value of art to society and cultivate a continuing interest in art.
